This spring, I’m releasing a new song titled “Deathmate” — a piece that began as a quiet prayer in the stillness of my own backyard sanctuary and grew into a full‑blown spiritual testimony in music. Written and composed by me, the song marks a deeply personal milestone in my creative journey, blending classical instrumentation with lyrical storytelling about faith, resilience, and divine intervention.

Musically, “Deathmate” opens with a haunting cello and French horn solo, setting the stage for a symbolic chessboard where “Checkmate” meets “Deathmate.” The lyrics trace a soul pushed to the edge and then gently lifted back by grace — a journey from dust and shadows into the light of God’s presence. The song’s structure unfolds in verses, each named like chapters: “Checkmate,” “Deathmate,” “Revelation,” “The Message,” and “Renewal,” leading into a soaring chorus that celebrates birds as God’s faithful messengers.

The heart of the song’s story comes from a real moment at Pool Pond, where a turtle dove — not native to our area — appeared as if placed there by unseen hands. I watched it perch on a withered branch, camera in hand, and felt an unmistakable whisper: “It’s not your time.” That image became the central vision of the song, transforming a simple field recording into a sacred scene lifted straight from scripture into the Minnesota landscape.

Later this year, I’ll be performing “Deathmate”  in a newly arranged version. I'll be expanding the piece with additional instrumentation and live narration that connects my wildlife work, writing, and faith. The performance will honor the animals, birds, and trees that have witnessed my life’s quiet battles — and victories — right here in the Rochester region.

For readers of the Rochester Sun Times, “Deathmate” is more than a song: it’s an invitation to remember that even in the darkest checkmate, the soul can find its flight again, carried on the wings of mercy and the quiet presence of God in the most ordinary of places.
