ROCHESTER, Minn. — At midnight Oct. 1, artist and author Lisa began work on Night Robin, the 25th original book in her Hallowink Hollow™ series. The story follows a robin who wants nothing to do with getting up early—or being a bird.

Lisa is creating the book at a light table that belonged to the late Jerry Fearing, a cartoonist whose work appeared in the Pioneer Press and other newspapers. She is dedicating Night Robin to his memory. Fearing died in 2024 at age 94.

In 2022, Lisa interviewed Fearing and hosted a book signing for him at her Rochester bookstore. He signed many copies of his books and sold nearly all of them. During the event, he spoke about his friendship with Peanuts creator Charles Schulz. The signing also aired on local news.

Lisa said Fearing helped shape her work, making it especially meaningful to begin a new book at the table where he once worked.

Although Night Robin is the 25th new creation in the series, it is the 26th Hallowink Hollow book overall. Best of the Hallowinks is a compilation and scrapbook of the series’ first 10 years, including outtakes, rather than a new story.

Lisa’s October 1 book-making tradition has roots in her participation in Inktober in 2016. The Hallowinks came to life in 2017. For Night Robin, she is drawing on the 3-by-3-inch black paper used in her recent books, with a fresh supply of pens, inks and erasers.

Allie, Lisa’s starling and a character in her syndicated comic Starlingo, joined her as she began the book. Lisa is also considering taking her trial “roving studio” to parks, cafés or other stops while she works on the story.
