On the evening of Tuesday, June 9, 2026, at 7:22 PM CDT, I witnessed a quiet and powerful moment at the Laurie (Loucks) Burt Wildlife Sanctuary. Charlie, our 2026 barred owl fledgling, made two short flights into view as I paused during a daily check of one of the oaks. A cottontail rested on one side, squirrels chattered on the other, and Charlie sat calmly in the warm glow of the setting sun—an image of balance and fragile coexistence.
These moments remind me why this work matters. We are currently battling to protect this land and the wildlife that depend on it. People have been damaging this land, and we are working hard to preserve the habitat and the creatures who call it home.
