Lisa Loucks-Christenson Completes Four Seasons Southeastern Minnesota Bugs Series with Fall Bugs on Winter Solstice
Lisa Loucks-Christenson marked the precise transition from fall to winter by completing Fall Bugs, the fourth and final installment in her acclaimed Four Seasons Southeastern Minnesota Bugs Series. At exactly 9:02:59 a.m. CST—moments into Winter 2025, amid temperatures of 6°F and wind chills near -15°F—she captured the series' culminating image, a poignant metaphor for nature's cyclical journey.
The series originated with Winter Bugs, exhibited at the National Eagle Center in Wabasha, Minnesota, from the first day of winter through the exact minute of spring 2006. Over that period, Loucks-Christenson documented more than 200 species, including insects, spiders, beetles, water crustaceans, and more. The original Winter Bugs book and trading cards sold out rapidly; a second edition will release in 2026 to commemorate the 20th anniversary.
This project evolved as a companion documentary to her bestselling Walk The Burn, chronicling seven seasons in the ghost town of Beaver, Winona County—now part of the Whitewater Management Area. Later volumes were produced at the Laurie (Loucks) Burt Wildlife Sanctuary, a registered National Wildlife Federation refuge on her property, honoring her sister.
The complete Four Seasons Southeastern Minnesota Bugs Series is slated for release in 2026. Updates available at archives.lisalc.com.
