Pileated Woodpecker at Dusk: A Silhouetted Ritual
Oak Savanna, Rochester, MN — March 28, 2026
By Lisa Loucks-Christenson, Founder, Photographer, Publisher

I shot this purposely to capture the Pileated Woodpecker in his native environment—while close-up shots are nice, this silhouette revealed him ruling his territory, a giant reptilian-sized bird pausing at twilight to drink from a bowl-shaped hollow high in an ancient oak. His form cut sharp against the melancholy glow of Saturday’s setting sun, crest briefly illuminated as he dipped his beak once, then again. I watched him drink, then launch into his choppy flight, calling into the fading light—perhaps for his mate I often see with him. Camouflaged within his shadowed oak kingdom, this was wild magic made momentarily visible.

This haunting moment graces the pages of my forthcoming Oak Savanna Winds: Willow Pond, a Wildly Personal™ wildlife sanctuary journal capturing daily life in Rochester’s hidden oak savanna.
