This chapter of Rosie Doberman traces the shortcut path that led to my childhood home in 1976 — three blocks where my life almost ended before it truly began. When I began the first pastel illustration for Rosie Doberman, the story started drawing itself. I began with his eyes — they still burn, live. The chalk blurred, the memory sharpened. Blue tops. Dark bottles. Pabst. My angels whispered the truth my child-self couldn’t name, and every pastel stroke helped lift another layer off the door I’d once kept closed. Two illustrations finished — and I’m still drawing courage, strength, and faith through color, light, and the grace of remembering.
