The Origin of Lost Words

By Lisa Loucks-Christenson

The album Lost Words began without intention.

While documenting wildlife behavior in a Minnesota oak savanna during winter, I found myself recording more than visuals. The stillness carried sound in a way that demanded attention—snow shifting under weight, wind threading through branches, the distant movement of animals navigating the cold.

These recordings were not planned as music. They were observations. But over time, they revealed patterns—natural rhythms that mirrored structure, pacing, and emotion.

The album grew from those moments. Each track reflects a specific time of day, moving from the quiet expectancy of sunrise to the long shadows of dusk. My voice entered not as a lead, but as another layer within the environment.

Lost Words is not about imposing sound on nature. It is about listening closely enough to follow what is already there.
