ROCHESTER MINNESOTA GETS DUSTING: FIRST SNOW OF FALL 2023!
ROCHESTER, MINNESOTA (Rochester Sun Times™) – The temperature dropped today, making it the coldest day we've had this fall season in Rochester. While working on this story and filming the snow flurries, it was 28-degrees Fahrenheit. Snow fell, turning the autumn orange, yellow, red and brown leaves to white, a foreshadowing to remind us that our beautiful potted plants are going to freeze if we don't bring them in. It’s time to take that time now, or say goodbye to them, thank them for their beauty and your time together.
The coldest Halloween I recall was my first year as a newly married and instant stepmother, still learning how to get our kids into their costumes and then how to see them covered under the heavy winter clothing. Nothing said Little Mermaid, like a bright pink think coat down below the knees, a scarf, and hat, with a fin tail. That was Halloween 1991. The memory of that day, still breezes through my thoughts every year when Halloween approaches. It was, as the Weather.gov states, the “Perfect Storm.” Mine included, our three kids aged, seven and younger, costumes and coats with that sleet-snow mixture. The snow, high winds and temperature dropped so fast, our pumpkins gathered frost on their hand carved eyebrows. At the last minute, we opted for indoor Trick-or-Treating at the Apache Mall.

Enjoy the light accumulation of snow. I brought my shovel out—just in case. If nothing else, I’ll use it to scrape the new pile of wet maples, walnut, and birch tree leaves that are piling up, again, just like the ones I scraped off my deck, yesterday, before the snow. I’ll probably save a few of them, like I do every year, pressing them in a book to look back on in the future and remember today, Saturday, October 28, 2023, as the first day it snowed this fall. Onward.
